About Coach Roman
20 years of play, 15 years of coaching, dozens of teams, hundreds of wins, and enough losses to stay motivated

Volleyball is one of the least instinctive, most teamwork dependent, fastest transition games in the world.  It's based on a round ball, a net with holes in it, and the opportunity to use three hits to get the ball over the net.  From there, it can start to get as complicated as you want it to be.  I've worked with pro women's beach volleyball players at refining their shot selection, and working recognition drills to take advantage of the holes in the net more effectively.  I've worked with kids who can run under the net learn to jump and hit the ball over it consistently.  I've been motivated by Special Olympians who learned to pass, set, and hit to targets.  I've coached boys and girls high school and Junior Olympic teams.  I've coached men's and women's intercollegiate varsity teams.  I've worked with men's and women's USAV teams.  I've taught classes for adult and youth beginners, and have run skills camps for elite high school volleyball players.  I've coached on east coast teams that have finished in the top 10 at Boys Junior Olympic Open Nationals, and even had a first season ever girls 16's club team win a bid for its age group to make it to Open Nationals!  And I've also coached teams that haven't been as successful.  In every case, I've learned something within the spectrum of "how it should be done," through "how it can be done," all the way to, "yeah, that didnot work..."  Even my toddling son can't be carried by a floating balloon without "spiking" it...  And, best of all, I've seen a lot of "my kids" give back to the game by becoming coaches in their own right.
Volleyball Dork
I love this game.  There are so many great challenges.  So many different types of athletes who can be successful at it.  So many people who can play this game for decades without losing any of their enjoyment.  The various concepts, tools, notes, explanations, drills, etc. that you see throughout this site come from hundreds, even thousands, of conversations over the course of many years of talking with some of the best volleyball minds I've been lucky enough to run into and have talk with me.  I'm sure the drills have been "borrowed" from various places, but never intentionally, and many have been adapted to fit my own style as it's evolved.  If ideas look familiar, or you can help me source them better, please do so!  If you like ideas, please feel free to incorporate them into your own systems.  If you want my feedback, input, or want my help in implementing anything you see on this site, let me know, and we'll see what we can do!
Customer Testimonials
Rather than cutting and pasting, I've put together some comments that I've gotten from players that I've worked with over the years on my Legion Volleyball site at www.legionvolleyball.com.  If you like some of what you see in this site specifically, please let me know and I'll very happily share your kind words with others.  I'd also really love to know what you find most useful, and what I can make work even better for you.  Happy volleyballing!
